Unlocking Ultra-Low Carbon Hydrogen

By harnessing pure oxygen and pressurized CO2, 8RH2 revolutionizes the conversion of natural gas into high-purity hydrogen or ammonia, eliminating carbon emissions while dramatically lowering production costs.

8 Rivers is reinventing hydrogen generation to decarbonize the world around us – buildings, industry, transportation, and agriculture.

THE HYDROGEN CHALLENGE:

Companies in hard-to-abate industries like shipping, heavy transportation, aviation, and power generation are seeking low-carbon alternatives to fossil fuels for their ships, vehicles, power plants, and industrial facilities. Hydrogen and hydrogen-derived ammonia do not release CO2 when burned, offering these companies a truly clean fuel alternative. However, most conventional low-carbon hydrogen production methods are inefficient, expensive, or highly carbon intensive. Traditional steam methane reforming and autothermal reforming hydrogen production processes either generate significant CO2 emissions, require the use of expensive hardware, or can even use toxic chemicals. This has made it difficult - environmentally and economically - for energy producers to justify upgrading their assets to produce low-carbon hydrogen.

Problem

To cut carbon emissions from heavy industry, chemical processes, transportation, and power generation, we must develop hydrogen generation that’s affordable and captures all the CO2 produced.

Solution

A better way to make hydrogen from natural gas that has zero direct emissions, higher efficiency, and superior economics.

Key Innovation

We revamped traditional reforming technologies and leverage oxy combustion to generate ultra-low carbon hydrogen at higher efficiency and lower costs while inherently capturing all the CO2 produced.

R

Status

Full-scale commercial projects using this well-proven reforming system are under development today.

Affordable and Efficient

By leveraging oxy combustion, this compact system enables hydrogen production at a lower cost compared to conventional technology.

Zero Direct Emissions

Features inherent high-purity and high-pressure carbon capture, eliminating all direct CO2 emissions and producing pipeline ready CO2.

Scalable Production

Production facilities will use standard equipment, are highly modular, and have inherent CO2 capture - enabling developers to scale quickly.

Ammonia Loop Compatible

Designed to seamlessly incorporate ammonia loop technology, driving production of the clean fuel poised to reshape the global energy landscape.

Reaching net zero emissions by 2050 requires the deployment of around 100 million tonnes of low-emission hydrogen production by 2030.
